How Do E-Cigarettes Really Work? 23rd July 2015 – Posted in: News – Tags: e-cigarettes, how, work
E-cigarettes are a relatively new product on the market, and one that has fast taken hold as a popular alternative and aid to quit smoking. It is also a way to make smoking safe in public places – and means that the person sitting across from you in the restaurant blowing smoke might not actually be blowing smoke at all. E-cigarettes are an alternative method of consuming nicotine – the highly addictive chemical found in tobacco – without the hazardous side effects of the smoke itself. But how do E-cigarettes really work?
How Do E-Cigarettes Work?
The way e-cigarettes work is actually very simple. The shell of the cigarette is battery powered, with a changeable cartridge you simply insert and click into place. The device then converts liquid nicotine (held in the capsule) into a mist, which the user inhales to get a dose of nicotine. To do this the battery in the device heats up the liquid in the capsule (which often contains flavouring, nicotine and some form of humectant like propylene glycol or vegetable glycerine) to the point that it turns into a misty vapour that can be inhaled safely, without containing any of the toxic chemicals usually found in cigarettes.
The largest component in an e-cigarette is the battery, which is fitted with a small LED light so that you can tell when the vaporiser is in use. At the end of the battery you will find a microprocessor, which regulates the rest of the cigarettes behaviour. This section takes up about 2/3 of the entire cigarette. In the final 3rd, you will find the replaceable cartridge, which holds the flavoured liquid nicotine solution. This cartridge is connected at one end to a mouthpiece, which captures the vapour produced and delivers it through a single controlled hole. On the other end of it is a sensor operated by a small button controls the LED light and the atomiser, signalling that the e-cigarette is now in use. By pressing that button you are activating a small atomiser, which heats the nicotine liquid in the cartridge and turns it into the vapour, which you then inhale.
Perhaps one of the most interesting things about e-cigarettes is how useful they can be as an aid to quit smoking altogether. A lot of people use them as a way of coping with a nicotine addiction in enclosed environments, as the vapours emitted don’t have a smoky odour and don’t contain the toxins that make second hand smoke so bad for your health. But there is also a range of reduced nicotine content or nicotine free cartridges available for those who want to wean themselves off smoking altogether, and need something to help them bridge that gap.
Are They Dangerous?
We all know the dangers of smoking traditional cigarettes. As well as being the starting point for what can be a lifelong nicotine addiction, but they also contain a toxic cocktail of chemicals that make the smoke they produce hazardous to the smoker and those around them. But because e-cigarettes are fairly simple in their design and theory, they don’t contain the same number of dangerous chemicals, making them a safer alternative to traditional cigarettes.
